Sarah J. Maas has become a publishing phenomenon and a household name in the world of Fantasy fiction, but like many other authors, her boost in popularity at least somewhat comes from BookTok. Maas’ publisher Bloomsbury reported a 10% jump in shares after it predicted higher-than-expected profits for the year.
Maas’ latest release, House of Flame and Shadow, is responsible for the recent boost, topping global charts while reigniting demand for her previous books. Bloomsbury has six more titles planned with the author.
Bloomsbury CEO Nigel Newton said, “Sarah J. Maas is a publishing phenomenon and we are very fortunate to have signed her up with her first book 13 years ago. Her books have a huge audience which continues to grow backed by major Bloomsbury promotional campaigns, driving strong word of mouth recommendation, particularly through TikTok and Instagram channels.”
And while Fantasy and Sci-fi fiction have experience a worldwide surge in popularity—more than 50% in the UK in just the last five years—social media trends like BookTok are carrying a lot of support for authors. According to Waterstones Managing Director James Daunt, social media trends like BookTok are encouraging younger readers to buy more physical books versus ebooks.
Bloomsbury reported that its profit for the year to the end of February is much higher than previous predictions, estimating sales of $366.9 million with a profit of $46.8 million. Official results will be reported in May.
