Rumors have been floating around Microsoft concerning a cheaper Xbox One that could be disc-less, and while the idea of a disc-less console has made me a bit skeptical, these rumors could potentially help future consumers wait before shelling out cash on a new console. VG247 stated that Microsoft has told trusted partners that it will release a new model Xbox One before the end of the year.

While their source was unable to confirm the existence of a disc-less model, it was inevitably stated that the console would be cheaper than the original $499 model. News like this isn’t surprising considering the slim Xbox 360 model that was later released after the original “fat” model (as well as the slim PS3 models), but it is a nice announcement for those planning on buying a brand new current gen console.  This news could be pleasant particularly for PlayStation fans who haven’t purchased the $399 console. And while Microsoft may be trying to sway the decisions of past Sony fans, it could be a futile battle if Sony decides to release a cheaper model of the PS4… an action which I’m almost completely certain will happen, especially if these Microsoft rumors are true.

In addition to the Xbox One console rumors, it has been stated that a Halo 2 Anniversary Edition will be released on November 11, complete with a beta experience for Halo 5. Microsoft has refused to comment on these rumors, but I’m more inclined to believe that there is more than a grain of truth in them, particularly about a cheaper console release. What do you think?

    1. I think it would be an odd decision to release a disc-less console so soon after the original. I could see it happening later in the future, but not this year. I could be wrong, though.

  1. I always wait at least a year or two before purchasing a new console. I might not even get one of these new ones. So far i’m unimpressed by both of them. There are no good games coming out any time soon so for now i’ll stick to my PC.

  2. […] Recent rumors have continued to circulate throughout the web about the future release of a $399 Xbox One model, with the particular rumor stating that the new model could be disc-less. While I personally doubted that any release before 2015 would contain such particular features, some people suggested otherwise. However, on Twitter, the Chief of Staff for Devices and Studios Group at Microsoft debunked all rumors surrounding a cheaper model. […]
