Baldur’s Gate 3 is my recent obsession. I’ve played over 260 hours of this game, which is wild considering I’ve only managed to finish one full campaign (I’ve started over and fallen into different romances way too many times). And while Shadowheart and Karlach have retained the majority of my attention in my past few attempted playthroughs, there has always been a character I wish could have been a companion.
Turns out, she nearly was.
Alfira is a tiefling NPC that can first be found at the Emerald Grove in Act 1. Hanging out on the cliffs overlooking the druid ritual, the bard is trying to compose a song to honor her deceased teacher. If you manage to keep her alive throughout the events of the game, she’ll end up in Baldur’s Gate with the intention of opening her own school for bards.
Many players—me included—have voiced disappointment at Alfira not being a regular at camp, but according to a specific mod, it seems that she may have once been planned as a companion character. The OIO – Overexplained Interaction Mod informs players of consequences, displaying which characters approve and disapprove choices made during dialogue sequences. Alfira’s name gets dropped in a few places that normally doesn’t appear in the vanilla version of the game.
Some players believe Alfira’s removed reactions have been buried in the game’s data since early access, proving that her character’s storyline as a companion was cut during development.
While it probably won’t happen, at least for Baldur’s Gate 3, perhaps we’ll eventually see Alfira shine as a primary companion (and potential romance option) in future installments. If I can force myself to come between her and Lakrissa. They’re so cute together!
What other NPCs do you wish were companions, and why is it Dammon?
